Race to the Top

Race to the Top is a competitive U.S. Department of Education (USED) grant open to State Education Departments. On August 24, 2010, USED announced that New York State had been awarded $696,646,000 as a winner in the second round of the federal Race to the Top competition.

New York is addressing the Race to the Top challenge through a cohesive plan that leverages and aligns our state resources and practices to improve education outcomes for all our students and close gaps in achievement.

To qualify for Race to the Top funding, states were required to advance reforms around four specific areas:

  • Adopting standards and assessments that prepare students to succeed in college, the workplace and the global economy;
  • Building data systems that measure student growth and success, and inform teachers and principals about how they can improve instruction;
  • Recruiting, developing, rewarding, and retaining effective teachers and principals, especially where they are needed most; and
  • Turning around our lowest-achieving schools.
